About

Independent State’s unique Appalachian Soul Rebel Roots sound is inspired by the natural beauty, rugged spirit, and rich heritage of the mountain state. The band’s influences, musical experiences, and instrumentation are as diverse as the mountain state itself. We keep one foot rooted in tradition while the other steps into new territory. Our genre-bending style uses soulful harmonies and a variety of traditional instruments to weave tales of wholesome family ties and the struggles of carving out a living in these hills. We pay tribute to the bumpy country roads, magical sunsets, and the rebellious charisma that are emblematic of the spirit of West Virginia.
